A few years ago I had visited an Indian restaurant in Leeds and ordered a paan flavoured cocktail. I thought it was amazing and started looking for alcoholic paan liquor online to see if I could recreate the drink at home. But I could not find anything in the UK. After doing some research I found that you can make any flavour simple syrups for drinks. I made one using paan mukhwas for the paan flavour and I surprised myself by how good it actually tasted. Here is how to make it.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp paan masala/mukhwas
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Squeeze of lemon
Method
Using a pestle and mortar roughly crush the paan masala.
In a pan add the sugar, water, lemon juice and crushed paan masala. The lemon juice will help stop the sugar syrup from crystallising. Mix and heat the mixture on a low flame until the sugar dissolves, do not bring the mixture to a boil.
Once the sugar has dissolved allow the mixture to cool down and pour into a bottle using a sieve so there is no paan masala in the sugar syrup. Use this for cocktails and mocktails. I love this with lemonade which makes for a minty floral refreshing drink. A paan mojito is also a favourite.
