Bateta Poha (Potato & Flattened Rice) is one of my favourite comfort foods which is usually made for Breakfast. This recipe was taught to me by my mum.
Ingredients: 1 cup poha/flattened rice (medium) 3 tbsp oil 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp sesame seeds Curry leaves 1 medium potato - cubed 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1/4 tsp coriander & cumin powder 1 to 2 tsp green masala Salt to taste Splash of water - if required Lemon juice Coriander leaves Method
Soak the poha in some cold water for 5 minutes. Then remove the water and rinse any impurities off and leave in a sieve for excess water to drip. In a pan heat up some oil. Once hot add in your mustards seeds. When the mustard seeds have stopped spluttering add in your sesame seeds and curry leaves.
After a minute add in your potatoes, turmeric powder, coriander & cumin powder and salt. Mix and cook on a medium heat. Stir occasionally and add a little water to help the potatoes cook. This will also stop the potatoes from burning. I do however sometimes allow the potatoes to crisp alittle as it adds a nice flavour and texture.
Once your potatoes are cooked, squeeze in a wedge of lemon and mix. Then add in your flattened rice which has been draining in the seive. Mix this through and heat the poha. The poha is already partially cooked in the flattening process, so it does not need alot of time to cook. Once the poha is heated through garnish with coriander leaves.
Serve your bateta poha with a wedge of lemon - the extra tang really freshens up this dish. Enjoy this for breakfast or as a small meal anytime of the day. I love this with a cold glass of milk.
